Fixing a jacuzzi tub sounds intimidating, but a lot of the problems homeowners call us for turn out to be filter changes, GFCI resets, or airlocks that would have cleared themselves in ten minutes. Before you pick up the phone, spend 15 minutes on this walk-through.
1. Confirm power. Look at the topside display. Anything glowing? If not, check the breaker in the main panel AND the spa-side disconnect (a separate GFCI subpanel usually within sight of the tub). Reset once — never more than twice.
2. Look for an error code. FLO, FL1, FL2, OH, HL, dr, Sn, Sn1, SnA — write it down before you cycle power. Every code narrows the diagnosis dramatically.
3. Check water level. The water must be above every skimmer intake or the pump will suck air, airlock, and shut down on flow-fault. Add water first, then re-test.
4. Pull the filter. A visibly dirty filter causes weak jets, no heat, and false error codes. Run the tub with the filter out for five minutes — if the problem clears, you've found it.
5. Bleed the pump. After a filter change or a refill, the pump often airlocks. With power off, slightly loosen the union on top of the pump until water burps out, then re-tighten. This alone fixes a huge percentage of "no heat" calls.
6. Confirm water balance. Test pH (target 7.2–7.8) and sanitizer (chlorine 1–3 ppm or bromine 3–5 ppm). Bad chemistry causes foam, odor, cloudy water, and premature equipment failure.
7. Listen at the equipment bay. With the pump running, does the motor hum smoothly or make grinding/clicking noises? Does anything smell burnt? Note it.
What's safely DIY
- Filter cleaning and replacement — 10-minute job, no tools
- Water chemistry balancing — test strips + basic chemicals
- Draining and refilling — attach a hose, gravity or a sump pump does the work
- Cover cleaning and 303 protectant application — quarterly
- Replacing a topside face plate (if it just unscrews and unplugs)
- Adjusting jet faces and air controls
- GFCI test button monthly
What you should not DIY
- Anything behind the equipment door with the power on — 240V at 30–50 amps is not forgiving
- Wiring at the breaker or the GFCI subpanel
- Pump or heater replacement — draining, plumbing, and re-priming without airlocking the heater is easy to get wrong and expensive to fix
- Control board or pack replacement — miswiring destroys the new pack instantly
- Leak repair inside foam-filled cabinets — one bad guess creates a bigger leak

The single most common misdiagnosis
"My spa needs a new heater."
Real cause, most of the time: filter is 90% blocked, water is low, the pressure switch is stuck open, or the circulation pump is weak. The heater is fine — it just can't fire because the control pack isn't seeing water flow.
A tech who quotes a heater replacement without testing element resistance, flow rate, and pressure-switch continuity is guessing. Always ask what tests were run.
When to stop trying to fix it yourself
Call a licensed tech immediately if:
- The GFCI trips more than twice
- You see water inside the equipment bay
- The motor smells burnt or is visibly discolored
- The topside shows an error you can't clear after two power cycles
- You're outside your comfort zone with 240V wiring
What to have ready when you call
Save the diagnostic time by having:
- Brand and model — printed on a sticker inside the cabinet, usually near the pump
- Year installed (or best estimate)
- The exact error code you're seeing
- What you already tried (filter clean, refill, reset)
- Water chemistry numbers if you have them
